A pocket companion for fast-moving written and spoken English. Built with Deaf Gain and universal clarity in mind, WHAT SAY reformats live group chats, emails, audio, and idioms into clean, visual, topic-first breakdowns. It meets you exactly where you are—so you can read and reply with confidence.
Made with love by a CODA and Deaf community member.
We know many people worry about AI. Let's be clear: nothing will ever replace human interpreters. Nothing will ever replace people learning ASL and building a truly inclusive community.
This app was built for a very specific reason. In our own family, our Deaf friends and relatives sometimes wanted a quick way to check a letter, or write a short email, without needing to ask a CODA for help every time.
At the dinner table or in fast group chats, we know the feeling of wanting to catch up without constantly asking, "What say? What say?"
WHAT SAY is a tool built to support your autonomy. It is here to give you a quick, independent option in the best ways technology can right now. We are excited to see what doors it opens for you.

A Note on How This Works
There is no written form of ASL. Because of this, WHAT SAY uses a visual Gloss and Topic-Comment structure to format English text.
This structure is what makes the app work so well for everyone. Topic-Comment layout is shared by ASL and many spoken languages around the world. By focusing on the main idea first, this layout naturally supports ESL individuals, neurodiverse thinkers, and anyone who prefers direct communication.
Built for Your Settings
We want you to use your phone your way. WHAT SAY is built to work with your favorite iOS features. It fully supports:
- Large Text & Dynamic Type (for easy reading)
- Invert Colors & Dark Mode (for high contrast)
- Braille Displays & Screen Readers (for tactile and audio access)
Equal footing
WHAT SAY is not ASL and does not replace a human interpreter. It offers equal footing when English moves fast—on the page, in speech, in live group chats and email, tone that was never spelled out, and hearing-centric idioms with space for gloss when you want it.
The app vs this website
The product is the native iOS app — not a website you live in. This site is here for trust, support, and updates. The app does the work on your phone; your words stay yours unless you choose to share them.
Thank you for trusting us with your words.
