Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 17, 2026 · Privacy · Terms
Not legal advice. This is a plain-language draft for an early release. Have a qualified attorney review before App Store submission or handling sensitive data at scale.
Summary
WHAT SAY helps you understand and respond to written (and, in future versions, spoken) English in a visual, topic-first layout. We respect your autonomy. We do not sell your messages.
This policy describes what we collect, how we use it, and your choices. If you use mock mode in the app, your text stays on your device and is not sent to our server.
Who operates WHAT SAY
WHAT SAY is an accessibility-focused app supported by a public source repository. For privacy or legal questions, open an issue at github.com/LoriCiv/whatSAY and include how to reach you.
Information we collect
- Text you paste or type when you tap WHAT SAY and are not in mock mode — sent to our server to generate summaries, gloss, tone guesses, and play-style lines.
- Optional API configuration you enter in Settings (your server URL) — stored on your device only.
- Your last saved result on your device (if you use Open last) — stored locally on your phone, not on our servers unless you share it.
- Standard technical logs from our hosting provider (e.g., request time, error codes) — not the content of your messages when configured correctly.
How we use information
When you use a live API with OpenAI, your text is processed under OpenAI's terms and privacy policy. Choose API settings that disable training on your data unless you have reviewed and accepted that use.
- To provide the interpretation features you request.
- To keep the service secure and fix bugs.
- We do not use your content to train our own models.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not claim to provide human sign language interpreting.
- We do not guarantee accurate tone, speaker, or gloss detection — outputs are aids, not facts.
Children
WHAT SAY is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided text through the service, contact us via the GitHub repository and we will work to delete applicable server logs.
Retention
Server logs: kept only as long as needed for operations and security, per our host's settings.
On your device: you control saved results and can clear app data by removing the app.
Your choices
- Use mock mode for offline demos — no text leaves your device.
- Self-host the API (open source) and point the app at your own server.
- Do not use the app for content you are not allowed to share.
Security
We use HTTPS for API traffic. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. Do not use WHAT SAY for highly sensitive secrets unless you accept that risk.
Changes
We may update this policy. We will post the new date at the top of this page. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
